Class Memories From 1959

In 1952 we had two movie theaters in Eustis, the State Theater down town and the Movie Garden Drive-In on the out skirts of town on South Bay Street. Every Saturday it was mine and my brother, Kenny's time and we looked forward to going to "the picture show". It was usually a Roy Rogers, Gene Autry or Rex Allen black and white. A newsreel would run first, usually covering the Korean War or some other world news, then a cartoon before the main feature. Sometimes they would substitute a "sing-a-long" thing called "Follow The Bouncing Ball" which was the worst let down a kid could see when we were expecting "Tom & Jerry" or the like. It cost us nine cents to get in and after the show they would hand out passes for the next Saturday morning for 10 cartoons. Nine cent movies were the greatest. The cutoff age was 12 years old. I was able to get by for almost a year before the cashier asked me how old I was and when I told her eleven she pulled out a year book and looked me up. That was a sad day. She wouldn't even let us in that day and with long faces, we went back home. The price went up to a huge twenty-five cents! What great times those days were.

On the weekends a bunch of us would pile into someone's car and head for the "Freezette Drive-Inn". Burgers, fries and vanilla cokes were the order of the day. The juke box was only five cents back the and we got our money's worth. Leilani Rostin and I use to go there and just play Elvis' new one, "Don't Be Cruel" until we just about wore it out. Sometimes we would leave there and go to the Dixie Drive-In on the way to Mt. Dora. It was one of these nights that we met the guitarist, Duane Eddie who had stopped in for a late night snack after doing a show. He gave us his autograph, which I still have. It was exciting to see him there. Great times, the 50's!
